The KDF reduction process (KDF redox) exchanges electrons with different elements in harmful chemicals and changes them into harmless components. Basically, the KDF redox process changes the chemicals at a molecular level, resulting in entirely new (not to mention biodegradable!) compounds.

This process is especially effective against chlorine, lead, mercury, iron, and hydrogen sulfide, making it an important pre-treatment process for some water filters. Not only does it reduce heavy metal water contaminants, but it also helps extend the life of certain water filtration units by removing corrosive substances.

Since KDF is great at removing chemicals at high temperatures and fast flow rates, this process is usually used in filters designed for showers, but can also be found in some drinking water filters. It's also usually found in conjunction with activated carbon filters since KDF is better at removing heavy metals and can prolong the life of the carbon by reducing the chlorine. Please be aware that KDF converts chlorine into chloride, which can be bad for people with high blood pressure.

And, in addition to removing harmful chemicals, the KDF reduction process also has some anti-bacterial and allergenic properties that help make the water more suitable for homes and residences.

While KDF is approved by the FDA for use in drinking water filters, it's currently mostly used for showers. Keep an eye out, though, since the process is incredibly effective and fast and will certainly show up in future water purification systems. Especially because it's a biodegradable and eco-friendly alternative to many modern water filters!
