How to Measure Your Home's Water Pressure
Reverse osmosis water filters work on the principal that your home's water pressure exerts sufficient pressure on the water entering the filter to force it through a filtering membrane. If your home's water pressure is too low this process will not work. Not to worry though, most reverse osmosis water filter systems have accessory pressure pumps that can be purchased to compensate.Before worrying about needing to buy a booster pump though, I recommend finding out what your water pressure actually is. Most homes on city water average between 55 psi - 65 psi of static water pressure (that's the pressure when no one is using any water in your home - none!). Well water is typically between 30 and 50 psi (that's the pressure setting on most well pumps).
If you are on well water or another water source, I recommend actually measuring your home's water pressure if you are concerned that it may be too low for a reverse osmosis system to work effectively. ( < 50 psi with TDS of 500 or below) It's fast and easy.
1) If you do not have water pressure gauge we have them aviliable for $18.99. See Watts Water Pressure Gauge with Hose Connection: 2) Make sure no one is using any water in your home - no flushing toilets, running dishwasher, taking a shower, etc.
3) Go outside to where you hook up your garden hose and screw the water pressure gauge onto your spigot.
4) Turn on the water (it does not matter how hard) and take your reading.
