Boil Water Alert / Boil Water Advisory

Upon occasion repairs to pipes or broken water mains can cause a drop in water pressure in the water system that supplies water to your home.

A "Boil Water Advisory" means that your water may have been contaminated.

A "Boil Water Notice" means bacteria or other contaminants have been found in the water.

Under both conditions, you should boil your tap water to a full rolling boil for 3 minutes.

What to Do When Under a Boil Water Alert

In the Performance Data Sheets for all water filter systems, NSF warns people: "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before and after the system. Systems certified for Cyst reduction may be used on disinfected water that may contain filterable cysts."

As a result, we recommend doing the following:


  • Do NOT drink tap water.
  • Do NOT use ice made from recent tap water.
  • Do not use tap water to make drinks, juices, or fountain soft drinks.
  • Refrigerator water dispensers and icemakers should not be used.
  • Bottled or boiled water should be used for baby formula.
  • Cook with tap water ONLY if food is boiled for at least one minute.
  • Wash dishes, fruits and vegetables in boiled water or water that has been disinfected with bleach. Using your home dishwasher is not recommended.
  • Brush your teeth with boiled or bottled water.
  • Wash laundry as usual. Laundry washed in hot or cold water is safe.
  • Wash your hands and bathe as usual. Bathing is safe as long as no water is swallowed.

What to Do With Your Water Filter System After a Boil Water Advisory


  • Follow water filter system cleaning instructions in the User Manual for your specific water filter system, including disinfecting it as directed.
  • Replace all sediment and carbon pre filters
  • Replace all carbon post filters
  • The RO membrane does NOT need to be replaced

What to Do After the Boil Water Advisory is Lifted

Run water for a total of 10 minutes to introduce system water throughout house plumbing.
Example:


  • 1 faucet - run for 10 minutes
  • 2 faucets - run both for 5 minutes
  • 3 faucets - run each for 3-4 minutes

Flush any faucet a minimum of 2 minutes to ensure clearing of the line serving the faucet.


  • Do not use water from your hot water heater for drinking until several exchanges of the tank have occurred.
  • Run dishwasher through a cycle or two before washing dishes.
